Welcoming 2012 with open arms; over the past year or so, I have not changed but more so grown as a person. All I have to do is take a look at the way I use to think when I started this blog, compared to now. I was young and naive, I guess I was sucked in to this system we live in; I use to pay so much attention to what people thought of me that at times, social expectations got the best of me and I forgot who I really was, and who I wanted to be.

2011 was above all; a year of growth. Without sounding like I've gone a little crazy, I'm at peace with myself and everything seems to make sense...I really do feel so blessed to be surrounded by beautiful people; from my family to my close friends. It really is true, nothing in life really matters unless you have people to share it with. I've discovered what it really means to live; to find beauty in the mundane (such as the beautiful fluffy squirrel I am currently watching prance around in my garden as I type).

“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. There are so many people (I use to be one of them) who are so oblivious to the real beauty of life; too busy living for other people and living up to others expectations. Life doesn't begin until you start living for yourself and start appreciating that the mere fact that you're alive and breathing and reading this, is a miracle. There are so many misfortunes and people suffering in the world, people dying and starving on a daily basis; if you're reading this and you're healthy, have a roof over your head and endless opportunities waiting to be devoured...it is a miracle.

I may not have the power to change the world but I intend to make the little bit around me a better place. I've discovered that it's not what you get, but what you give out in to the world that matters...

If you're reading this and are a little confused; as they say; it cannot be understood, only experienced.

Here's to facing fears, honesty, spreading positivity and living how you want to be remembered. Better leave it here as I have goals to achieve, I leave you with Akala...listen carefully.

Success; part of the list

Ralph Waldo Emerson stated that ‘To win the affection of children’ was part of a list of what it meant to have succeeded in life. Some may frown and think okaaay…..but I can wholly relate. It warms my heart when I make babies/children happy and see their delicate little faces light up in to a smile. When I spend time with them and actually communicate. People wonder why I love babies/children so much - this may sound silly, but I find it easier to relate to children than some people my age because they have no hidden agendas or motives, undamaged by society….they represent human beings in their purest form….they’re real.

They’re unfazed by the cruel world and just want to be cared for and adored…for somebody to simple just be there and give them time. Today I spent quality time with my beautiful niece and nephews and just being there with them, playing with them, watching them learn and grow over the years into their own little characters…is such a precious, beautiful thing and receiving their affection back, is an entire reward in itself. So yes, Ralph Waldo Emerson I’m with you.

A little goes a long way

A few weeks ago, whilst happily chomping at my dinner I was disturbed by a phone call. Those who know me know that nothing comes between my food and me; this better be good. On the other end of the phone all the way across the world in Hong Kong, was a man in reach of the people who saved his wife and child’s life.

As I sat cross-legged and comfy on my hard wooden living room floor, my Granddad explained the confusing call. Thirty years ago, my late Grandma provided shelter in her own home in Vietnam, for a mother and her newborn baby – they were complete strangers.

Thirty years worth of asking around, long distant calls and letters sent around the world later…the husband of this lady had finally tracked my family down, declaring his appreciation from across the world. It was a small gesture from my Grandma that thirty years on - still had an impact.

In a world where we’re all so unconsciously self-absorbed, it seems that we have become a generation that has forgotten and underestimated the importance of humanity. How often do you stop and give the time of day to a stranger who looks like they could do with some help? That fragile old lady who needed help with lifting her suitcase off a train, or the stranger who needed directions? Most likely you shrug it off and excuse it with ‘oh they’ll manage’ or ‘I’m sure somebody else will help’. These thoughts have run through my head too.

See, it’s these little moments where we turn our head and walk away which could brighten somebody’s day, or in some cases - change their life. Luckily for me, I love old people. I’ll never forget the smile and gleam of appreciation in the eyes of an old lady I once helped. Go and help that fragile old lady.

We all do it. As soon as we see somebody, whether it be the person we walk past on the street or the person sitting next to us on the bus...we instantly judge them based on their image or what we think we know of them. We build up a picture of what they could be like. We all do it...but it doesn't make it right because the majority of the time; we're probably far from the truth.

Take the other day for example; I went to an event at Scala, London to the Traphik and Lil crazed event. For those who are thinking who on earth are they?! They are both American entertainers/rappers who have earned a name for themselves through YouTube - type 'Timothy' and 'Lil C' in YouTube, they'll be the first ones that'll pop up...in a sense they are 'YouTube stars'. At the event were also the lovely Ricky and Ben (manager of Lil crazed). I know what you're all thinking, it's probably similar to the reactions I received whilst speaking about them to other people who hadn't heard of them before - the raised eyebrow and 'YouTube stars? Seriously?' But before you're too quick to judge...remember these are people who make YouTube videos, get a few hundred thousand views hours later...and make a living from it.

I'll be honest; I expected these guys to be pretentious with big egos...but I couldn't have been more wrong. During the club event I observed how they made time for each and every fan, talking, having fun, taking huuuuuundreds of pictures....and I managed to convince Traphik aka Timothy Delaghetto to pinky promise to do an interview for an upcoming project.

The next day where they held a meet and greet event, I was humbled as I observed them speaking to and taking pictures, receiving gifts and their general interaction with fans. They couldn't have been more down to earth, genuine, sweet and funny. "Hey I recognise you, I'm subscribed to you on YouTube!" and "Hey I know you, you tweet us all the time!" are a few memorable lines to fans. Four hours of meet and greet (this was the day after the event, where they went to bed at 6am and went shopping in the morning/afternoon before the meet and greet) they still made time and effort and laughed and joked with each and every fan. I have nothing but love and respect for people who are successful yet manage to remain humble, people who appreciate the people who support them rather than develop a huge ego. I felt an instant pang of guilt as I gradually got to know the real them over the two days - definitely not pretentious - total opposite; intelligent, sweet, funny, kind...

Moral of the story: don't ever judge a book by its cover - the inside may surprise you....

It's crazy.

I haven't been posting for while because I've been feeling disconnected from Fashionbake. I look back at previous posts on here and I cringe. I even considered deleting this blog altogether. Throughout the two years I've had this blog, I don't feel like I've been my real and honest self...or maybe I have but I was just a little lost. Perhaps it's the vast amount of personal growth that I've experienced lately that has made me realise how much I've not changed, but grown as a person. I haven't blogged properly since before I started my second year at uni, it's difficult to explain or even put into words...but I've been on the journey of self discovery and personal growth. Without sounding like I've joined some sort of cult, I'm seeing things like I've never seen them before. My perspective has been sharpened, my eyes opening.

Before, I didn't post certain things or write certain things in the fear of who might read it, what people may think...but I promise from here on, there'll be wholly honesty and the truth. I cared too much about what other people thought about what I posted, the things I wrote or the general fear of being judged; I'm done with that. I'm not here to live up to anybody's expectations but my own.

Here's to being real.

You know you’ve discovered a gem when you come across a photographer’s work and you could continue to go on, and on, and on…allowing the images to suck you in and take you to a whole new place. That’s what happened a while back when I discovered Iceland born, but London based Saga Sig. I’ve followed her work for a while but whilst interning for (the amazing) Anna Trevelyan, I helped out on a shoot and had the privilege of meeting and working alongside Saga for a shoot for Bullet magazine…and let me tell you, she is friendly and beautiful as she is talented. It’s refreshing when you come across people in the industry who have so much positive energy you can almost feel it bouncing off of them.

I escaped to Mallorca for a few days with the family for a short, refreshing break. Relaxing poolside reading/sunbathing with the relaxing voice of Ed Sheeran creeping from the in door bar, beautiful scenery surrounding the hotel and everywhere in general, eating so much good food that ended up in daily food comas, beautiful beaches...Mallorca was a small slice of heaven.

There are food and clothes stalls, a free vintage cinema bus and for the ladies, free hair and make-up...head down for fun vintage festivities!

If I lived in a country where there was constant sun and beautiful beaches nearby (the Style stalker ladies are based in Australia) this is how I would dress everyday...

So, I failed my driving test (again) and when you invest so much time, energy and money into something and you don't succeed....it's a stab to the heart. Yeah I'm not afraid of letting the world know that I failed, because I will continue until I pass. Anywaaaays on a more happier note; I'm off to Spain next month and realised my wardrobe mainly consists of black and white...I figured it was probably time to inject some colour for summer. Pastel colours, drapey silhouettes and lace are all on my summer palette...

LIFE; WHAT'S BEEN HAAAPPENING.

I'm sitting on my bed, windows all wide open with my cousin lying next to me enjoying the gentle breeze....family members sitting in the garden....and I once again, wonder how I ever got so lucky.

Throughout my nineteen years of life, I look back and it dawned on me that 9 times out of 10, I've always been lucky. I was born into a huuuuge family, brought up by my amazing parents with good morals and I constantly surround myself with people whom I learn life lessons from daily. When I was younger in middle school, I remember entering the Easter card competition (whilst making it I remember having this feeling that I would win...call it intuition), sitting in assembly anxiously waiting for the teacher to call out the name of the winner....much to my enjoyment, indeed she announced "And the winner is...Jessica Ly".

(Yes, I kept it!)

More recently, I was presented with an opportunity that reminded me of just how lucky I am. You are all probably familiar with the name by now (I've posted about her many times)....remember the name Anna Trevelyan? (Nicola Formichetti's assistant, stylist, Fashion director of Untitled magazine....I could go on) Well....the last few weeks saw me interning for her.

I started off doing pick ups and returns (my poor feet aren't used to 6 hours of walking around London, especially with a suitcase the size of me and double my weight) I got lost plenty of times, almost died being crammed underground on the over heated tube and dragging the suitcase up and down crazy amounts of stairs, got a wrong bus...and on many occasions I wanted to give up....until I reminded myself how lucky I was and realised that no matter where I intern, this would be the case. I soldiered on. Aside from pick ups and returns however I also helped out on a photo shoot for Bullet magazine and also assisted Anna on shoot for Asia based brand Izzue.

As an aspiring stylist, Anna Trevelyan is one of my biggest inspirations in the industry and I feel so privileged and honoured to have been given the opportunity to work with her. The time I spent there taught me so much, not just about the fashion industry....but it opened up my eyes and allowed to grow so much as a person and beyond.

With a status like hers, I know what you're all wondering....yes, she really and honestly was lovely. So grateful for the opportunity and still wondering if it was all real...

Graduate Fashion Week: UCA Epsom

Launched in 1991 (wow Graduate Fashion Week and I are the same age) it's that time of the year again where the graduates from 50 different universities showcase their work in the aim of impressing industry individuals. Getting the train from Northampton and heading straight to Earls Court, I made it juuust in time for the UCA Epsom fashion design graduate show.

(Camel blazer, white shirt & cotton lace shorts, all H&M. Cobra snake sunglasses. Vintage leather shorts. Henry Holland suspender tights. Black Clarks leather ankle boots - excuse the flat hair...it was raining!)

My favourites were Ken Fong who showcased a male collection of a mix of delicate fabrics in neutral shades that included an above the knee cut off arm navy coat and light grey shirts with navy collars and cuffs.

Anna Melkova showcased a mix of leopard print, black and terracotta leather pieces with flared A line silhouettes.

Catchy name, right? That's what grabbed my attention when I saw GET YOUR PLANE RIGHT ON TIME, back in my early blogging days. I've been following the blog for nearly two years (Dennis' photography is what caught my eye) and have watched it steadily grow into the inspirational little online hub it is. Get your plane right on time is the blog of Dennis Swiatkowski, his site he describes as 'a journey in to a potpourri of fashion, film, music, observation and city-hopping.' Below are two of my favourite videos by Dennis.

For those who don't know, who is Dennis Swiatkowski - could you briefly describe what you do?

DS: I am a photographer and filmmaker. Lately, mainly doing online videos.

What made you start 'Get your plane right on time'?

DS: Well, it was first a personal blog, to share my experiences with friends and family. But then, I started doing streetstyle and it attracted a bigger audience.

What does 'Get your plane right on time' represent?

DS: It represents lifestyle, more so than fashion. Lifestyle is everything, whereas fashion is very specific and constraint to cycli.

What do you love and hate about your job?

DS: I love that I can combine commercial assignments with assignments that I do for myself and fun. I dislike to get disappointed.

Have you always had a passion for fashion/photography/film making?

DS: I have always had a passion for the visual experience. I picked up on photography rather late in my life, but I am glad I did eventually!

You're always travelling back and forth, which city is your favourite and why?

DS: I have two favourite cities. London, because it is such a huge hub of creative influx and the ideas and artistic output is tremendous. It's very inspiring. Cape Town, because it is such a nice city surrounded by a stunning landscape. It's creative scene is also rapidly expanding and taking the world stage by storm, especially in music (Die Antwoord, Jack Parrow.)

Best and worst experience industry wise?

DS: My best experiences are most of the time during fashion week (Paris, London), you meet so many new and lovely people! My worst experience is - again - to be disappointed by broken promises.

It has recently come to my attention that despite being a Fashion Journalism student and having the love for digging my head into and over indulging in magazines, I have never really posted about them before. So...let me introduce you to one of my favourite magazines, Wonderland. Coming from a small town (Northampton) all I used to read was Glamour and occasionally Elle mainly due to availability. Moving to the outskirts of London meant that a wider variety of magazine are available around me and I discovered Wonderland a few months back.

Editorial wise, Wonderland is similar to i-D and Dazed & Confused; edgy and innovative. What makes it different and what I like about Wonderland is the clean layout and the interviews and features of people in the creative field. This issue (APRIL/MAY 11) has two young cover stars; the beautiful and quote Katy Perry 'Fresh meat' Sky Ferreira and the controversial 20 year old who is creating a whole new hip-hop movement of his own....none other than Tyler the creator. It also features my favourite bad girl Alice Dellal, Zoe Kravitz, Jameela Jamil, Professor Green amongst many other cool names that makes it worth the read (or in most people's case.....look). If you haven't already....go and grab your copy!

It was Melissa who inspired me to follow my heart - if it wasn't for her I wouldn't be studying at UCA, nor would I have this blog...so I kinda owe her big time. Oh, she also happens to be my cousin....HAPPY 21ST BIRTHDAY MISS MA!!

I'm back home in Northampton for two weeks for Easter (thank goodness - that's a whole 2 weeks of not cooking for one) and as temperatures are steadily soaring, so is the need for a summer wardrobe.

A long while ago the big bro passed down some old jeans that I used to wear - as the 'boyfriend' jeans phase gradually faded, I stored them at the back of my wardrobe waiting for the day they'd come into use...that day finally came. I decided that they'd no longer be worn so cut them up as I needed new shorts....

1) I cut off the legs of the jeans and unpicked both back pockets

2) I poured bleach roughly over the denim, scrunched it a little and then rinsed with hot water....

3) I then hung them out to dry

4) Finally, I distressed the denim and cut up a leather dress and cut out crosses and hand stitched them on...wa-la!

Easy peasy. Hope you all had a blissful Easter, nothing like getting fat on Easter eggs (and crying about it afterwards!)

THE PALPITATIONS, DANIELLE WEBB.

In a sense, Danielle Webb is just like many other women around the world; a mum with a part time job…except, she isn’t just your average mum. When she’s not doing the usual things mum’s do and photographing antique coins, you’ll find her fulfilling her other passion – music.

Having always wanting to be a singer/song writer and having a need to express feelings she never experienced before, Danielle began writing a lot of music after her daughter Eve, was born. Recruiting her two friends and putting an ad on Gumtree to look for their 4^th member, they found Davey and in 2009 The Palpitations were born.

She describes her songs as a ‘Mixture of love stories from the suburbs, stories of isolation, motherhood, of finding, retaining and losing your identity time and again.’ Being the only female member and the lead singer, and with the looks of Twiggy, it’s only natural she has a distinct sense of style that mirrors Audrey Hepburn’s. She describes her style as ”The idea of a 'real woman'; usually 1950's style combined with a real woman today.”

With her hectic schedule, it’s hard to figure how she actually gets any sleep; “I wake up, do some bits that need doing on my laptop and at home and then I get Eve up, get us both ready and take her to school at lunch time. I get on the train and go to work - photograph antique coins all day until 5pm then rush down the tube, run for train, collect Eve and then come home,” She tells me.

“I see my husband and we all have dinner together then we kiss goodbye and I’m out the door rehearsing until midnight, and then….bed.”

If she had the chance to be somebody else for the day, it’d be Marylin Monroe. “It would be interesting to be Marylin Monroe for a day to see if she was at all happy and to find out the gossip on Sinatra, Bobby and John Kennedy.”

Danielle is the living and breathing proof that it is in fact possible to be a mum, hold down a part time job as well as fulfilling your dream. Rock 'n' roll mum at its finest!

I don't dare quite say this yet as I'm still convinced it's too good to be true....but I think I may have found the first pair of shoes EVER that don't cause my feet pain whilst walking/dancing for hours...amazing! I went out into town yesterday on a mission to find a pair of comfy flat shoes...and I came back with these beautiful babies, typical me - can't resist a good shoe! (AND they're not black....shock horror). Perfect with jeans, dresses and shorts and with Summer well on its way....I don't think these will leave my feet anytime soon!

The other day, my cousin called me up and we were speaking about what we should do for my Granddad's birthday. I thought about what we could buy, what we could do....then something quickly sprung to mind. I thought what about something that money can't buy, something meanful that'll make him smile...

I then came up with the idea of making and putting together a video of all his 18 Grandchildren wishing him a happy birthday with pictures and a special guest feature....my idol, inspiration in life, the one and only.......Jin Au-Yeung. Yes really. My Granddad watches Jin on TVB and is a huge fan as am I, calls me every time he's on TV to tell me watch and generally loves him. The video speaks for itself, money can't buy happiness.

I've recently started a 'interviewing' unit at uni; my first semester started with pure writing (I study Fashion Journalism and as silly as it sounds and as much as I did appreciate learning the basics...I got a little tired of juuust writing news stories and fashion pieces). This unit has so far included hunting around for people to interview - classmates, a third year student and the latest task of a tracking down a new designer.....and I've loved every minute of it. There's nothing like the excitement of meeting and engaging with new people, but most importantly, learning from others.

There's nothing more inspiring hearing and listening to the tales of somebody who has experience in the ever fickle fashion industry I aim to tackle. For my project I had to interview a 'new designer' and write up a 500 word profile and pitch it at a magazine; below is my profile of Jason Mui, pitched at i-D magazine. STORY IN A NUTSHELL: In February I got in touch with the editor of Neon; a free monthly fashion/lifestyle magazine distributed back in my hometown Northampton. I was born and bred in Northampton and no matter what people say about it, how bad the area is etcetc I'm proud to call it home. I've always wanted to somehow connect to the people here (I say here as I am sitting in bed back at home home) and thought about writing an article/feature - I thought about writing a fashion piece but decided on a piece more broad so more people could relate; I pitched an idea to Janice, sent a piece her way and she liked it and decided to publish it...

The piece is called Rise to success (if you follow my blog you may have read it here). We all have down days, days where we feel like nothing is going right and we all get lost....hopefully my piece inspired those in Northampton who were stuck in a horrible rut!

No, these aren’t two guys selling vintage fur coats…they are the two creative individuals behind the newly launched Howl Club. Howl Club is one part Chris Fraser, one part Adam Parker. Two old friends who for the past few years have ‘talked about starting a music website and then over several drinks, conversation drifted into the idea of a record label.’

Both sharing a huge passion for music, in particular searching for and discovering new bands, they have always ‘joked about starting a label’ to put out bands they love. As they both grew older, they became more involved with music. Chris has been involved with bands and is currently one fourth of the consistently impressive (I’ve witnessed a few live performances) band, Foxx Bandits. He also currently works in music PR and Adam as a music journalist.

‘In the summer of 2010 we decided to move in together, which meant hanging out more and talk of a label became more and more serious, with us eventually thinking f**k it we should stop talking about it and just do it.’ And then on March 1^st 2011, Howl Club was born.

What separates this newly born label from any other record label is that instead of taking on bands and releasing albums, they release one-off singles or EPs from bands they love. They mainly focus on new talent helping to build a platform for them to become more well known.

Expect the upcoming period to be a busy one for the boys; ‘Over the next few months we have our first releases coming out and we will also be announcing some more acts, as well as a couple of exciting shows. We will be releasing the debut single by London based band CROWS in May and then following that up by a debut release by a Birmingham based band, SWIM DEEP.’

Alongside all of this, the boys also run a website where they are and will continue to expose new talent in the music field as well as including work of artists/illustrators/graphic designers. Sounds like the start of something special…jump on board the Howl Club!

We've all heard the devastating news, seen the horrific images and videos of the disaster in Japan and I can't begin to fathom what these people are going through. I still find it surreal that on one end of the world there are people happily living life and on the other.....people are dying.

In aid of the disaster, myself and my housemate Michelle thought of ways to raise money and came up with the idea of making badges with different designs on, in dedication to Japan. No, I'm not Japanese...and although it may not be much....it's something. So, fellow UCA-ers and people in Northampton, buy a badge for minimum of £1 and help make a difference....a little goes a long, long way!

THE LIVING ROOM.

I've walked past a few times, resisted temptation in fear that the baked goods would win me over ending in me indulging in every selection of cake available (I've started going to the gym) but today, in cause of celebration...I entered the Living Room for the first time.

Greeted by soft music being played on a jukebox, wooden baskets filled with jewelry, photo frames, candles, mirrors of all sizes hanging on walls and placed randomly amongst items, lampshades, beautiful furniture, wooden carved letters, baby toys and clothing, cake stands, a rail of vintage clothing...I wondered how I was ever able to resist coming into this place.

The Living room, located on South Street in Epsom, has been running for two years and is the product of husband and wife, Vicky and Rick Walsh. What makes this little hidden gem unique is that it also doubles as a tearoom; yes, meaning they serve a selection of tea's and homemade cakes baked by Vicky herself. "My mum and aunt also help with the baking during busy periods" she says.

Soaking in the cosy surrounding, noticing them both rearranging and organising bits around the shop, it became clear that the couple are passionate about their little business and how much it means to them. After enjoying my tea in a fancy cup and the delicious homemade scone with clotted cream and homemade jam, I think The Living Room was definitely worth giving in to temptation for!

I'm appalled at myself, according to records the last time I posted about baking was er....nearly a year ago? My deepest apologies! However in order to make up for it I've decided to share my secret and most trusted trademark ginger cookie recipe...tried and tested by many family member's and friend's over the past year's; I promise it's a good'un. The picture's from above were taken the last time I made these for my best friend for her birthday and sent them via post....baking definitely makes perfect little gift's...enjoy!

Ingredients

350g self-raising flour

pinch of salt

200g caster sugar

1tbsp ground ginger

1tspn bicarbonate of soda

125g butter (plus extra for greasing)

75g golden syrup

1 egg, beaten

Method

Pre-heat oven to 160 C
Sift self-raising flour, salt, sugar, ginger and bicarbonate of soda into a mixing bowl.
Melt butter and golden syrup together in a saucepan over low heat stirring with a wooden spoon. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
Make a well in the dry ingredient's then pour butter and golden syrup mixture into well.
Add the beaten egg and mix thoroughly to form a dough.
Using your hands, carefully shape the dough into even-sized balls. Place the balls well apart on several baking sheets lightly greased with butter, then flatten then slightly with fingers.
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden. Carefully transfer to wire rack to cool.
ATTACK COOKIES!

Ever feel as though what you’re doing isn’t enough? That you try your best but you don’t succeed? This one’s for you.

Failure; we’re all led to believe that failure is a bad thing, that it’s the end of the world and that if you fail you’ve lost the battle…and we couldn’t be more wrong. If you don’t succeed the first time around whatever the scenario, it doesn’t mean you’re a failure; it means you’re human. We all have bad days, times where we feel alone and that nobody understands but you can choose to blame your circumstances on fate or bad luck, or you can choose to fight back. Life isn’t about dwelling on your mistakes; it’s about learning from them. Failure teaches success. Things aren’t always going to be fair in the real world and life isn’t always going to go your way, but for the most part; you get what you give.

Each and every person, yes, even you, has greatness inside of them and the opportunity to succeed…sometimes we just forget to believe it. One thing that the greatest and most successful people in the world have in common is…hope, belief and perseverance. (Ok that was three things).
Think they all succeeded by being successful in everything that they ever did? Think again. Yes they may be talented or particularly intelligent but truth is, they’ve all most likely fallen down hundreds of times and gone through endless struggles before they got to where they are now and the secret to their success? Not giving up. Take our very own Alan Carr for example, bullied at school but did he let that stop him? Hell he instead never gave up and look where he is now, successful and hosting his own show and definitely in a position where he can laugh at his bullies whilst sticking up his middle finger, cocktail in one hand.

As Rocky said “It ain’t about how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” So no matter how much of a bad day you’re having, however hard life is and however many obstacles there are to face; keep your head up and keep moving forward. Because as somebody once said, ‘Our greatest glory is in not never falling, but in rising every time we fall.’

Yesterday, 24th February I helped out at the KTZ show. It was my first time being backstage, helping out, sweating like I've never sweated before, dressing model's....all in my heels of course(my feet paid the price for that afterwards).

Black, white, blood red, canary yellow and blue swarmed the A/W 2011 collection (they must have sensed that we could all do with a burst of colour during winter). Black and white and red and white vertical stripes were prominent on leggings and shirts, along with striped PVC gloves that were nearly shoulder length and prints resembling splattered paint were layered against the stripes. Accessories such as hair clips, sunglasses, brooches, necklace’s and bangles were similarly bold and bright in geometric shapes, nicely accompanied the outfits.

The maze like patterned pieces with the pattern in black/red and the gap in between being transparent and the black fur coat with stripes on the back of the arm’s were my ultimate favourite’s from this collection!

Although I didn't get to see the show, I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to be part of the amazing, hard working team backstage. The reward was the amazing show!

Q. Did you always know that you wanted to be a model?

I've always wanted to be known for something but since I can remember I saw a fashion mag with men and I wanted to become what they were! So I guess I have always wanted to be a model and today I’m living my dream!

Q. What was it that made you choose this career path?

I really don't know? I still ask myself that today, I always think if I didn't wanna model what would I be doing right now and achieved and done with my life...interesting ehh!

Q. Who are your inspirations in the fashion world; model’s who you idolize/designer’s/creative people in the industry?

Anyone who has achieved their goals and dreams and never given up! I look up to KATE MOSS for being 5 ft 7 in the fashion world and killing it! I hope to shadow her with her success as a 5 ft 7 male uk model!

Q. What would you like to see more of in the fashion industry?
I would like to see more shorter models & more variety of models not the stereotypical model.

Q. If there was one thing you could change in the world….what would it be and why?

Now thats a pretty deep question...I really don’t know, I suppose to stop everyone hating on people and letting people be themselves. Also stop war and poverty!

Q. Last but not least....where would you like to be in 5 years if you had it your way?

I wanna be healthy & happy! Living in my own flat in central London, living my dreams and seeing my friends achieve more and more! More friends as they are my life as my mum!

Yesterday was a day that I had imprinted in my calendar and looked forward to for a while. It marked Jessie J, sorry I mean J J J J J J J JESSIE J's gig at KOKO, Camden, presented by MTV Brand New. I've previously posted about her here and here. If you're reading this and you still don't know who she is...where on earth have you been?!

For the benefit of those outside of the UK (I'm presuming the entire population of the UK has heard of, and most probably knows all of her songs word for word) Jessie J is a youtube sensation hailing from Essex who I can't get enough of. She has most us girl's doing it like a dude, with fans including Justin Timberlake, Tinie Tempah and more recently Nicki Minaj.

There has been mixed reviews about Jessie and the fair share's of "Haven't we seen it all before?" however realistically, whether we're talking about fashion, music or film....haven't we seen everything before? As Jin Au-Yeung once said, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." What's different about Jessie J is her sense of positivity, energy and realness she brings to the stage, no 'Yeah I'm good and I know it' attitude like most artist's.

Last night, she came out on stage, she laughed, she joked, she jumped and connected with her fans who she calls 'Heartbeats". Within 5 minutes of entering the stage and in her 4inch (maybe 5) leopard print heels, it was clear to see despite her long awaited and well earned success so far, her feet are still firmly on the ground. Jessie J is making her mark and if you're not on board supporting her, better move out of her way fast she is a force to be reckoned with! The video's above speak for themselves, now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to do it like a dude.

A little late on the blogging front, but worth blogging nonetheless. Hailing from France studying hairdressing before he turned to wigs and opened a hairdressing studio in the ever-trendy Shoreditch in East London, Charlie Le Mindu is a name that we should all familiarize ourselves with. Launching his label only a year ago, he has caused quite the stir in the industry.

During his S/S 2011 show at London fashion week, Le Mindu made sure all eyes were on his headwear designs….sending some model’s down the cat walk in hot pink gogo boots, bags, his headwear creations and…..nothing else. (Although the luckier models were able to protect their modesty behind cheetah designs.)

You’d think that having gaga and Anna Trevelyan, stylist and assistant to Nicola Formichetti, as fans would be enough but he just won the on/off visionary award. Oh and he is featured as part of Selfridges ‘Bright young things’ project, where he has been given a window display place to show his vision on his creative work. He may have already achieved impressive amounts, but Le Mindu is only just getting started.

Want a piece of him? (His creative work that is) You’ll be glad to know that you can get your hands on a piece of this designer’s creative input who makes even Gaga go gaga. He holds a pop up salon every so often at London boutique Machine-A where you can book a hair appointment, that’s if you have £100+ to spare…but what’s that in exchange for cool hair, right? I'm looking forward to see what else this genius has up his sleeve...

Although I'm piled up to the neck with work, deadlines and a presentation all for this week I thought I'd quickly touch upon something whilst it's all still fresh in my head. I told myself that 2011 would be all about stepping up, facing fears and not being afraid of chasing after what I want.

Well back in December, I applied for an internship at Dazed Digital (the online sister of Dazed and Confused magazine). I applied on impulse and in all honesty expected nothing from it and was scared to hit the send button, (hello, interning at Dazed?! One of the magazines that tops my list for being consistently innovative and inspiring...it seemed like a far fetched long distant dream) but I went ahead and sent my CV and cover letter nevertheless.

A few weeks later an email came through from David Hellqvist, Commissioning Editor of Dazed Digital asking if I could go for an interview. Not expecting a reply, I gulped, considered not going (I have an on going fear of interviews....) but the voice in my head told me to suck up my fears and GO. So I did. After a few of my friends/family members pushing me, I jumped on the train and went.....the last time I felt knots in my stomach was last year pre-uni interviews...yeah, whilst making my way there the thought of turning around and running away crossed my mind a thousand times.

I had an image in my head of a scaaaary Editor....David Hellqvist was completely the opposite. Luckily for me, he was indeed a lovely man and the interview went pretty well, apart from the fact that Dazed were searching for somebody who could start ASAP but my Uni projects and assignments meant that I couldn't start the day they needed an intern and unfortunately I didn't get the internship....but none the less; I'm grateful for the opportunity. The moral of the story is....take every damn chance and opportunity you have. Although I didn't get the internship......I'm glad that I jumped on the train, I'm grateful that I had the opportunity in the first place; sometimes the journey is the destination. The old Jessica would have let the opportunity pass due to fear, then regretted it after.....the new Jessica jumped.

Probably one of the funniest moments of 2010, Malta. MR CRAZY was definitely a little crazy.

I don't really believe in the 'new year, new start' business. If somebody wanted to change...it should take effect immediately and not be left until the 'New Year'. Life is way too short to sit around waiting for a calendar date to tell you that it's time to make a change. However below I've come up with two things that would probably pop up most people's new years resolutions list:

THE TRUTH

Way too many people, people sitting in cafes, people on the streets, even people around me are afraid to admit the truth, scared to face the truth whatever the reason. Whatever the truth and whatever your beliefs....stand up for it. Whether it be facing who you really are or what you want to achieve. Stand up for what you believe in, whatever it is...the truth always matters, so tell it. No matter what.

STEP UP

A few days back at a dinner party where the usual Happy New Year Speeches took place over way too much food; somebody said something along the lines of...."Whatever you did this year.....do it ten times better next year." Basically, step up.

"Stepping up. It's a simple concept. It basically means to rise above yourself; to do a little more, to show you're something special."

Happy New Year to you all, may 2011 be filled with love and happiness and good people!

Christmas; the time where everybody is eager to show off what they've been spoiled with. Yeah it's exciting and nice to wake up to presents under the tree.....but my best gift is a gift I have and am thankful for on a daily basis, not one that just satisfies me on Christmas day and becomes a bore then on after. My ever growing family, are the greatest gift I'm forever grateful for. My parent's, Granddad, brother's, aunt's, uncle's, cousin's and nieces and nephews; all a hundred and something of them.

It's precisely 3.49 am, yes AM and instead of sleeping like a normal person....I'm doing an outfit post. The black feather clutch and salmon silk blouse are birthday presents which I received in the post from some good friends...do I have the best friends ever? I do. Sent in the post because University means all of us are dotted around the place and sadly the days of seeing each other on a daily basis are over; yet this changes nothing. Winter (argh) has finally arrived, but it somehow hasn't affected my love for wearing my leather shorts.....even if it means braving the -9 degrees outside! I'm a crazy person. I'm also enjoying gradually building up my ring collection and the latest addition is the animal teeth claw ring above which barely leaves my fingers.....anyways the bed is desperately calling, it's probably about time I sleep.

Josh Beech Overdose? Never.

On Wednesday 15th, the date I'd told myself to stick into the diary but then typically forgot about...I managed to snab some last minute tickets to see none other than Josh Beech, perform live at The Bowery.

I went to see Josh Beech, however the act before him couldn't escape without a mention. I recognised the lady that got on stage to perform, as the lovely lady who smiled at me in the toilets 10 minutes earlier; she goes by the name iMMa. In all honesty I wasn't all there as I was eagerly waiting for Josh to perform....that was until she opened her mouth and started singing. A lady who sings with such passion and energy on stage, who has a powerhouse of a voice that's enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up; it makes me wonder how people today with no singing ability are huge stars yet somebody so talented hasn't made it big?! The video below is one of my favourites from the night, 'Good girls and bad boys' however in all seriousness, none of her video's on youtube does her real voice any justice.

Moving on...those that follow this blog or who know me personally, know that the mere mention of the name 'Josh Beech' is enough to make me weak at the knees; I don't know what it is....but it's just something about him. My fellow readers outside of the fashion field if you're thinking he looks familiar...it's probably because I've posted about him a zillion times; here , here, here and er here. The first thing that springs to most peoples minds when they hear the name Josh Beech is 'that model from Levis/Burberry/Dazed and Confused'; what most people don't know is that behind the perfectly structured jaw line, tattoo sleeve and those see-through eyes, lies a talent.....his beautiful singing voice. I could write about it but you can just listen below....he is undeniably talented and has a beautiful voice; however speaking from experience, Josh Beech Live is 100x better. I would advise anybody to go and see him and iMMa perform live!

His new EP 'Burnt Out' is definitely worth a listen and he is currently touring....catch him while you can!

Some of you may recognise her, but for those who do not...let me introduce you to Anna Trevelyan (remember her name). An up and coming stylist, fashion director of Untitled Magazine, and after modelling for his Uniqlo campaign and being asked to assist him, she now works closely alongside Nicola Formichetti (Lady Gaga's stylist) assisting him mainly with his work involving Lady Gaga. Isn't this information alone enough to make you want to be in her shoes?

At the age of 18 after she discovered styling, Anna Trevelyan knew this was the career path she wanted to take. Inspired by Nick Knight and Alexander McQueen and hailing from London College of Fashion studying Fashion Styling and Photography, she has successfully made quite the name for herself and is the living and breathing proof that hard work pays off.

I remember meeting Anna a while back at the Dominic Jones X MACHINE-A Launch party, a party where the whole room was filled with cool kids and people who you can't help but stare with envy for looking so effortlessly damn cool. As much as I admired the guys with Quiff's and the Alice Dellal style inspired girls.....there was one person who stood out amongst them all;

From her multi-coloured hair to her over sized studded leather jacket...it was hard not to look twice (or maybe three or four times).

You've probably come across her work at some point without realising it; She styles for Dazed Japan and the Charlie Le Mindu's S/S11 London Fashion week show that had everybody ooh-ing and ahh-ing, Anna was the mastermind stylist behind it. (Refer to video below. I dare you to blink.)

This is the kind of person who inspires me, somebody who isn't afraid to be who she is, dress how she feels and chase after her dreams and not give a damn what anybody else thinks. What makes it all the more inspiring is that none of it came free; she worked for it. She's young, she's fresh and she's taking over the fashion industry...

I'm somebody who gets bored easily and changes their mind an awful lot. This time around nail polish was the culprit. I finally went out and purchased the new Barry M crackling nail polish that the nice man at the cinema informed me of a few weeks ago...you basically paint a base coat colour and paint the Barry M one on top and ta-da it crackles! As common as it has become....I like it. I'm also head over heels in love with my new double finger cross ring; above are the rings I wear most days; they're my amour.

MY DIY JACKET: The product of two old jackets and some customising.

Back in the 40s, make do and mend was more to do with survival; it was popular due to lack of money. Fast forward 60 years and it has become somewhat a social trend. Have an old beaten leather jacket and an outdated denim jacket lurking in your wardrobe? Cut off the arms of both jackets, sew on the denim arms to the leather and WA-LA; you now have a brand new jacket mirroring that of Alexander Wang's...who said make do and mend was only for Grandma's?

THE PAST WEEK IN A NUTSHELL:

Experimented with my new Canon. Had a delicious dinner with my two cousin's on Oxford Street whilst en route back to Epsom on a Sunday night.
Explored and fell even more in love with the ever exquisite Camden.
Hung with the housemates who have become my little family (that would be Traycee's messy room; expect no less from a fashion design student).
Procrastinated and devoured a lot of time to my thoughts; I've come to realise those who truly matter. Also being at Uni means I'm meeting new faces everyday, however just FYI in all aspects and not just Uni, I choose the circle of people around me based on their personal qualities; I really don't give a shit if you're wearing high end designer and you're beautiful. P.S I don't let loose and let my guard down unless you prove your worth.
Oh yeah and I've been busy with Uni....speaking of which I have way too many deadlines to meet; toodles!

My deepest apologies for the disappearance; as of late I've been running around like a headless chicken trying to find the balance between getting work done, cooking proper meals for myself, socialising, meeting deadlines and travelling from Uni to home most weekends to see my family as well as helping my parents out. Whoever thought Fashion Journalism was an easy course, or that fashion as a whole is 'easy' and all fun and games....let me clear the air and tell you that it most certainly isn't. On another note above is what having a few minutes to grab the first few items lying around in the attempt to not be late for lectures looks like. I cannot wait for my hair to grow back, I miss my bun!

Yesterday whilst in the search on YouTube for something funny to lift my mood, I remembered something that happened 2 years ago that will never fail to bring the giggles (and cringing at that).

Two years ago my cousin entered the worldwide H&M Tokyo Competition, the concept was simple; you upload a video of yourself and your best fashion tip, people vote and H&M would pick one lucky candidate from the Top 10 people with most votes and then send them to Tokyo for their first store opening in Japan. The winner would then be the reporter for one Tokyo special H&M Video Podcast.

After endless nights of planning what to say, do, and record....below is the entry which I make a very cringe worthy appearance in.....and well......out of hundreds of candidates worldwide, what do you do know, we WON! When I say we I mean my cousin Jenni Ly who was the candidate, me who as a maniac shoe lover, enforced the 'Shoe's will either make, or break an outfit' line and my brother Simon Ly who recorded and edited the video; we were all in it together and we won. Now take a peek and laugh away....I was tormented with "WHO KNOWS?" jokes by my family for a good few weeks, I can handle it.

Above is the official H&M podcast my cousin featured in, reporting all the way from Japan. Yesterday I noticed something that I wasn't aware of 2 years ago; at 1.38 minutes she interviews none other than Nicola Formichetti; for those who don't know Nicola is the mastermind phenomenon stylist to Lady Gaga, Creative director of DAZED & CONFUSED, Fashion director of VOGUE HOMMES JAPAN, Senior fashion editor of ANOTHER MAN, Contributing fashion editor of V, V MAN and ANOTHER. In other words...I was screaming at my mac. Anyways, all in all the endless nights of practising recording was all worth it; it's amazing what can happen when family come together!

PAPER DRESS

I've always dreamed of roaming around the East End, where all the cool kids hang. The other day me and my cousin did just this. Venturing out to East London for my beloved cousin's birthday, we had a few hours to spare which resulted in us heading out to explore the East End. I was hoping to bump into blogger phenomenon Pelayo Diaz, sadly I didn't. We did however discover something that didn't disappoint; Paper Dress Vintage.

Paper Dress Vintage is a vintage store in Shoreditch where you can buy, sell and hire vintage clothing, shoes and accessories; you're probably thinking right...sounds like any old vintage store...however this isn't any old vintage store; it's a vintage store with a twist. Supplying all things vintage from real fur coats, old beaten leather jackets that looked like they taken right out of Grease (I almost expected Danny to prance out with an outburst of "Summer lovin', had me a blast...."), Victorian laced dress, satin maxi dresses; it was vintage heaven.

As the pictures show, as well as satisfying the needs of vintage clothing lovers, it also doubles as a cafe/coffee shop. That's right, a vintage store/Cafe all in one. It also caters for those who like to take time browsing piece by piece (my cousin had to drag me out), relax across the room with a cup of tea and a brownie, then continue browsing. I'm not sure about anybody else but Paper Dress definitely caters to my needs!

1) I spend half my life on a train. Sometimes on floors. The image above was taken when I managed to catch the WRONG train. (It happens at some point in life, I'm hoping this is my only.)
